Watch out: It's never too late to meet our life goals

Our life goals give us a sense of direction. After finding these goals, people usually focus on resources to try to reach them, with varying degrees of success. This gives them a clearer sense of what really matters in life. These goals of our lives will give us obstacles along the way, but these obstacles give us the motivation to overcome them at the same time.

Our life goals vary greatly as individuals. However, the goals make it possible for people to focus their efforts. By doing this, each person’s actions are usually in accordance with their goals. The goals allow us to set a course and evaluate our progress. Fulfilling the goals gives us a sense of satisfaction and personal fulfillment, which in turn increases our happiness and self-esteem.

Watch out: An adventure with a twist

Watch Up is an animated film from 2009. They were directed by Peter Docter, winner of two Academy Awards, and produced by Disney and Pixar. At the beginning of the film we meet Carl Fredricksen. Carl is a shy little boy with an idol: the explorer Charles Muntz. Muntz’s adventures were shown in cinemas at the time. One day, Muntz is accused of producing or inventing his archaeological finds. Little Carl is devastated when he hears this news.

However, Carl knows a girl named Ellie. This girl confirms that she is also a fan of Charles Muntz, and that she is the founder of his fan club. Ellie reveals her plan: to take the club’s headquarters to Paradise Falls. Carl knows that Paradise Falls is the area Muntz has explored in the Amazon jungle.

Carl and Ellie in Watch Out

Ellie and Carl promise to help each other complete this trip. They remain friends, eventually marry, and move to the old house where Ellie has her fan club.

Carl and Ellie then start saving money for their trip to Paradise Falls. However, different circumstances in their lives force them to spend all their savings. The opportunity to complete the long-awaited trip became increasingly remote. They eventually reach old age together, and unfortunately Ellie suddenly becomes ill and dies. They never manage to complete the dream trip to Paradise Falls.

Fredricksen: A life focused on goals

Carl Fredricksen, now a widower and rather grumpy about it, is deeply sad and affected by the death of his wife. Forced to leave the house where he has lived all his life, he decides on a drastic action and draws up a plan.

He manages to tie and inflate thousands of helium balloons to his house on the day he is to be thrown out. His house miraculously rises and flies to freedom. Carl is finally on his way to Paradise Falls. With the help of little Russell, a scout, Carl will finally be able to reach Paradise Falls. In addition, he will also meet his childhood hero there: Charles Muntz.

Carl Fredricksen’s life is an example of perseverance in achieving our life goals. Both Carl and Ellie lived happy lives. Both worked together to achieve this dream trip. Even if in the end they were not able to do it together, it is only to achieve a goal in itself. And in his old age, Carl keeps his promise to Ellie and travels to the Amazon. He achieves his goal, and by doing so, he even gets a new family.

Our life goals in old age

Each person creates different goals throughout life. These goals change over time by the person’s changing skills, abilities and interests. In old age, our strength diminishes. An older person must constantly adapt and change their goals accordingly. This is the only way to enjoy old age to the fullest.

Through old age, we become aware that time is now a limited resource. This knowledge changes how a person acts. Knowing that there is a limited time left for us will give us the opportunity to reformulate our life goals to adapt them to this new reality.

Pixar film Look out, how do we achieve our life goals

What often happens is that our life goals in old age are different from those we had when we were young. In general, youth’s goals are based on education and friendship. On the other hand, our life goals in our recent years are more related to leisure and recreational activities, as well as our health.

Because of this, it is of the utmost importance to establish personal life goals in old age. Having something to do is one of the things that makes the most sense of our existence. Our goals provide the necessary motivation to meet this stage in life.

Research has shown that it is very healthy for older adults to consider taking up the life goals they had in adolescence again. Our goals in old age may still be associated in some way with our interests during young adulthood. In this way, it can be easier to find the motivation, energy and resources we need for these new goals.

The importance of optimistic people

In addition to this, optimism is always a big plus in old age. People who have this quality of life can be an anchor for older people, and help them to continue in difficult times. For the elderly, these people can be a great source of motivation, and the perfect travel companions to reach their life goals, just as we see in the movie Watch Out.

Yes, it is true that age can distance us from some of our goals. However, there is always the opportunity to adapt these goals to our current circumstances or opportunities.

At 60, we can hardly be expected to be Olympic gymnastics champions. But what we can do is get involved in what we can and even compete with people our own age who share our interests. Regardless, it is always a goal we should all have, even in old age. What goal is that? None other than the goal of overcoming our fears. It’s the goal has no age barriers, and the movie Watch Out is a perfect example of that.
